Key idea
A linear equation can be written as y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. To graph a line, plot the intercept and use the slope to find a second point.
Example
Graph y = 2x − 4.
- The y-intercept is −4, so plot (0, −4).
- The slope is 2, so rise 2 and run 1 to get another point.
- Draw the line through both points.
